HOW TO MAKE A BROOCH

April, 2020

The project began in spring 2020, when the pandemic suddenly increased the amount of time spent at home. I wanted to share a simple way of making an accessory from materials close at hand. An instruction drawing made by my son became the starting point for a film created with artist Mizuki Kin outside Berlin. Without a detailed plan, we worked improvisationally and allowed what happened on location to become part of the process.

Henning Schmiedt later composed “Selbst” for the film, and Satoshi Okamoto (sub-tle.) created the sound design. What began as a small tutorial based on a single drawing gradually changed through collaboration. The film began as a way of showing how to make an accessory, but it also became an experiment in touching nature, making with our hands, and looking at familiar things from a slightly different perspective.
